Pituitary apoplexy is a rare and life-threatening disorder often requiring emergency neurosurgical intervention to preserve vision and prevent cerebral herniation syndrome. Infarction or hemorrhage of an enlarged pituitary gland or pituitary tumor is the most common cause of pituitary apoplexy.
